Laika (2007) (First Second) : Laika is a work of historical fiction that chronicles Russia’s achievement of putting the first animal in space. That first animal is a dog named Laika. The story unfolds from the perspectives of Sergey Korolyov (Chief Engineer for Sputnik 2), Yelena Dubrovsky (the dog trainer for the program), and Laika herself.

Laika was an abandoned puppy destined to become Earth’s first space traveler. This is her journey. Nick Abadzis masterfully blends fiction and fact in the intertwined stories of three compelling lives. Along with Laika, there is Korolev, once a political prisoner, now a driven engineer at the top of the Soviet space program, and Yelena, the lab technician responsible for Laika’s health and life.
